QB Livingston turns down Scholarship to Walk-On at BYU

“If there’s a guy that’s going to flip your commitment, it’s Ty Detmer.”

Those were the words from Rigby, Idaho quarterback Hayden Livingston, who flipped his commitment from Air Force to BYU Sunday afternoon after announcing his change of plans via his personal twitter account.

Despite having a scholarship offer from Air Force, Hayden saw enough from BYU and decided to accept a preferred walk-on offer. “BYU is the perfect fit of athletics, academics, and the religious side of things,” Hayden said. “It is the best combination of all three things.”

After speaking with head coach Kalani Sitake, it was determined that Hayden will develop this fall as a quarterback, and then depart on his LDS mission. Upon his return, Hayden will be given the opportunity to receive a scholarship.

While not possessing the size of fellow Idaho quarterback Taysom Hill, Hayden does possess similar speed. Hayden often broke off long runs from the read option or scrambling after broken plays. Hayden said that he runs a 4.44 forty-yard dash. This past season, USA Today named Hayden first All-Idaho First Team QB.

Hayden is an intriguing prospect for BYU. Although not highly recruited by power five schools, Hayden has the athleticism to make an impact at BYU during his career. As the opening quote indicates, it will be interesting to see how Ty Detmer’s reputation will help influence other recruits in the future.
